A more modern ship travelling on rivers

Post by wieder »

This was suggested before and sketlux was one of the players suggesting something like this. How about:

- moving only on rivers and ocean tiles but not on deep ocean
- can carry 2 or 3 units
- moves 9 or 12
- cost of 40 or 50
- only able to transport smaller units like riflemen and marines but nor armors

This could be one or two different units. Probably would not be a problem if it would be using the transport graphics if it would not be able ton enter deep ocean.

Available with engineering. If this would be 2 different units the 2nd one could become available with mobile warfare.

Call it gunboat or gunship. Should be available with ironclad or later.

- moving only on rivers and ocean tiles but not on deep ocean

it should move on deep ocean but be slow in general

- can carry 2 or 3 units

1 unit if any

- moves 9 or 12

the less the better. even triremes on river should be slowed down.

http://forum.freeciv.org/f/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=89695 in this post I proposed a landing craft. It was intended to obsolete the tireme. So I propose:

- moving only on rivers and ocean tiles but not on deep ocean
-can carry --> 4 units (twice as a tireme), maybe even 6?
-moves 12 if tireme has 9. If tireme has only 6 it could have 10?
-Can carry heavy equipment opposed to tiremes

I'd call it a "barge".

Is it possible to make a small capacity boat that can also be Loaded on another bigger ship?
Im thinking Landing Craft available with Amphibious Warfare.
Capacity only 1 (Otherwise you may have issues with recursive loading and huge armies in one ship..), non-combat (capturable?), short range, Rivers and coastal only, but can be carried across deep ocean by Transport. Maybe even deployable from subs with spies?

This would allow you to conduct long range missions and send your marines deep up river in to charlie country when they arrive...

The reason I like swordsmen on triremes so much is because of the possibilities that combined units give you. 2 Infantry units on a boat are effectively a single unit with high movement, that can attack twice and still withdraw afterwards.
I think there could be many more ways to create units that are stronger or more dynamic when combined, for example I am glad there are both modern and ancient bombard units available in corbeaus new ruleset.

If you give it zero attack you can call it a barge. Otherwise it's a gunboat. :-P
