For setting up LT34, rank some previous games
I would like to hear what game was great for you personally and what made it great? I would also like to hear about those games that sucked and what made them suck.
We got some really great comments about making the games work from other threads. Reading about that will help planning the game. If you feel that I'm asking too much and you would just like to play, you can skip this thread. If you are interested and have time for it, comment on this thread and tell us about the good and the bad games.
Because not everyone has played every game, it would be great to see some explanations about those games most of us have probably not played. I mean games like pre-LT30, some national games (not including national sports:) and the Greatturn games.
Both good and bad games are the focus here but if you can figure out some good comments about the mediocre games, that might also be interesting to hear about.

What sucks in all games, is that there is diplomacy needed. I have no time for diplomacy, so I suck.
And even formally lone-wolf games are involved in alliances, tech/city tradings, etc...
It would be totally awesome if there is game so anonynized, that there is no way to contact with other player off-the-game and coodinate moves.

For me best games was that games i have won - it mean it were that games i could use more dirty tricks then my opponents.
Suck games was when i got worse terian (number of tiles for settlement, specials, rivers) then my close neighbours, becuase they got boost to adventage in early stage.
Best and worse games could be same games.
The worst game for me was this one when one player was online 24/7, able to move anytime I wanted to do anything. It was nasty.

maho, You are gary kasparov of longturn, but even gary kasparov can lose if he only has ten minutes to move, but opponent has unlimited time.. We should have an option for a game with time limits like: 15 minutes: turn 0 to 4; 5 minutes: turn 5 to 29; 10 minutes: turn 30 to 59; 15 minutes: turn 60 to 99; 20 minutes: turn 100 to 129; 30 minutes: remainder of game. I like your idea about anonymizing players, so to let each player login and show their leader name instead of user name (ie, "sitting bull" for sioux). there are some players like to form the same wolfpacks and cadres each game, and are too sensitive about attacking or making strategic moves like backstabbing, etc. That is part of game.. anonymizing would remove this sort of silliness...maho wrote:What sucks in all games, is that there is diplomacy needed. someone in the past made a suggestion to have wonder that you build to allow communication with all players. Ie, you cannot chat until you build it. That would solve this problem you just stated. Or, instead of a wonder, it could be a tech like "telegraph" or "morse code" that allows only communication between players that discovered it. Might be a good suggestion for one of the game developers like "per" or "cafzi" to put in before it's released... to accomplish this, they would have to add a new effect, and then in the ruleset it could be configured to be a wonder, tech, or etc. imo, in the very least, you shouldn't be permitted to chat with players you have no contact with! Especially micromanager players will spam all players with queries each turn to get info about them if this isn't put into game.
edit: if this effect ever were put in my game developers, i would suggest two wonders:
1) Wardenclyffe Tower (allows communication with all players in contact with)
2) Internet (allows communication with all players)
also: would be good if ip addresses could remain hidden, because many players have recognizable ip addresses. Ie, if you see korean ip address, you know it is kevin

Why are you still accusing me about this church? I am strongly against wolfpacks and I did not play in this church community.mmm2 wrote:ie, LT31, where edrim was spamming everyone with requests to join "church team" in first 10 turns of game
Church was builded (AFAIK) from newbies and they wanted to bypass this cummunity from game to another without success, because they cannot stay newbies all the time.
So please remeber - I did not joined to any church in this game. You are missing me with someone else, it is easy once you cannot be miss with anyone.
About another parts of your post:
-In our case Gary Kasparov should have infinite time because he is veteran and newbioes should have only a minute. Because if we switched it situation is going to be more fair.
-How can you abandon all communication between players? Do you mean communication by words sharing each other or exchanging techs? Besause if you are talking about words you are quite funny guy once we have all this popular chat rooms, jabbers, irc, etc. Sure take newbies chance of communication to each other, before they will get how it works you can stab them.

Corbeau wrote:As soon as you permit communication, anonymising goes to hell. If people want to establish contact, they will.
i meant, private chat messages should only be able to be sent to those you have made contact with (made contact with = in F3 window shows not "No Contact" as status).

Yep, because you cannot go to www.longturn.org page and sent an email to someone in this game. Cmon, if anyone wants to communicate with someone else he will.mmm2 wrote:edrim wrote: -How can you abandon all communication between players? Your proposal gives hudge adventage to old players because they have all other old players in their other way of communiations.

I'm notmmm2 wrote: maho, You are gary kasparov of longturn,
i think it's not enough. I think that full anonymisation would be if every player see different names and nations of players, different city names etc.I like your idea about anonymizing players, so to let each player login and show their leader name instead of user name (ie, "sitting bull" for sioux).
So eg, I'm Polish named Boleslaw Chrobry, and I see you as Sioux Sitting Bull. But you can see me as Indian Indhira Ghandi, and you're in fact British Queen Elizabeth.

To extend it - you need to invent diplomacy in order to be able to distinguish others units. Otherwise you see them all as pirates without distinguishing between non-you nations.mmm2 wrote:someone in the past made a suggestion to have wonder that you build to allow communication with all players. )

Additional thought about which game is good and which is not: I like game in pre-muskeeters stage, when units are few, slow and I'm able to manage them in few minutes.
When things go too far with technology, then thigns goes too fast, there are too many units, things goes too massive and exceeds scope of my mind . Paratroopers and nukes stage is just awful.
So, this game is almost ok, because ended in quite early stage. Also, there were few games like that in the past.
