What is the recommended way to communicate with some other players? Is the email system on longturn.net working?
One thing I don't like in the game is that you cannot talk to any neighbour. There should be some days set to allow talk or a player who has been contacted. Why not?

Huh? There is in-game chat!
Also, you can send private messages through that. Put a ":" after name, Like this:
Corbeau: Hello!

Thank you, Corbeau!
Had no idea about this chat function. Unluckily there is no online help available, or so it seems when you type '/help'. A full list of chat commands would be great after typing '/help chat' or so.

Chat is where you can type commands. Anything not started with / will be sent as message to all (or to alliance if alliance checkbox is ticked).
To chat with specific playername, use
playername:

That is not all, but. e.g. '/list' will display a list of players and their IP connections (there you can see who is online). Question is: what is the entire set of /-commands available. Nobody knows.
Chatting is an online activity. Can I wait for many hours until my aimed player appears? Often not. I was hoping there is a mail client incorporated (specialty for the online players). I'm afraid it is not there.

The in-game chat also works for offline players. The player will see the chat messages when he/she connects. Most people seem to use discord but the in-game chat is quite ok at least for starting the talks.
You can also see the online status, ip-address, iddle status, ping etc. form the nations screen. From there you can choose the tabs to see.
The in-game help has some tips for using the in-game chat.
The most important thing is to keep the allies only checkbox checked and uncheck that only if you really want to make a public message. Also... starting the line with : means the message is public
Private messages can be sent by adding : to the player name (or part of it) like this.
wie: hello hello
And I'll get a private "hello hello". You can try that out by sending a private message to yourself.

That is, try typing "/help commands".
