Longturn games other than FreeCiv

I want to propose FreeOrion http://freeorion.org/ as alternative game for Longturn. It's a 4X TBS influenced by Master of Orion. It's written in C++, Boost and uses Python for server and AI scripting.

The game has a long history but only several of years ago I started to work on rich multiplayer support. There is a public multiplayer server for current stable release: https://freeorion-test.dedyn.io/

Main idea of proposal is to have a game without annoying RTS part. I also summarized other pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Real parallel turns! No RTS issues! The game doesn't depend on order of player actions.

  • Python server API. It enough to install python connector for required DBMS and rewrite python scripts for authentication.

Cons:

  • Poor ruleset support. Only small set of values could be altered on server without desync with official client.

  • Immature features. Release with features required for longturn game isn't published. Moreover timeout feature isn't even in master branch (https://github.com/freeorion/freeorion/pull/2441).

  • Poor administration documentation. Current wiki is outdated.

  • Poor diplomacy support. There no teamed games yet.

Of course all those cons are planned to be fixed in a future. Also I hope to get some feedback from Longturn team before next release.

Re: Longturn games other than FreeCiv

I would definitely play that. I stumbled on FreeOrion a long time ago, but it seemed unfinished and the community seemed much less lively than here, which didn't guarantee that it *would* be finished.

I'll clean up the tests on this thread soon. looks like if I post the last message without the space the forum gives an error.

Re: Longturn games other than FreeCiv

I keep missing to join that stuff. No complete version for Linux, I suppose?

How do the games there usually end? Military conquest or some other way?

We still use development branch to test new features so appropriate version isn't available out of box. There are snap packages and PPA repository available although.

I don't setup big galaxies to get more games to test the game, so it's hard to get other victory except military, also mostly players are concede when they see they are too weak compared to enemy, but pre-previous game two players was near to get research victory.
