Yeah, I also don't like this poll. First Kryon did not sign to the game, second it started too early, third he did not attach a diff to the config. He defines a number of tiles per player, but does not mention landmass. I withheld

I agree that for a large number of players map size would be too large and remaining players would have too many cities and unhappiness.
Perhaps the formula sqrt(N/30)*18000 would be better. With this formula, map would be 10400 for 10 players (1040 per player), 18000 for 30 players (600 per player), 25456 for 60 players (424 per player), and 32863 for 100 players (329 per player).
Yes, landmass is important also. I was thinking to open a separate poll for that.
I did start the vote too early. I forgot it'd expire after a week. Perhaps the votes should last for 1 week only after certain number of players join.
I am still not sure whether I'll play LT30. I can't vote for LT30 polls but it allowed me to open a vote. Perhaps this should be fixed.
I don't like the idea of attaching a diff to the config. Most LT players just want to play and don't know much about the source code. It is straightforward to change the map size anyways.

I added a check to see if the poll creator is a member of the game - but still, what if you create a poll and then unsign? I'll assume such incidents will not occur that often, so the added check is only advisory.
Well, if a poll is straightforward enough a diff is not necessary I guess.
As to 329 tiles per player - that's an 18x18 block of tiles, barely enough for 9 cities. Keep in mind the cities will be bigger (as in ltex) if a poll does not cancel that setting. And assume half of that is water.
lt29's 60% landmass is very nice, I enjoyed the map a lot. Maybe for lt30 we can try 50%.

600 tiles per player sounds way too big. Does it include ocean tiles? How many good tiles it has?
I am one of the Freeciv.fi guys which is a Freeciv community in Finland playing local longturn games. The latest game we are playing (it started with 126 players but now has ~70 active players) has ~100 good tiles/player (meaning not ocean, tundra or desert tiles) and total of ~300 tiles/player. It looked first that it was not enough but now that half of the players started idling or has been RIPed it really isn't that small map anymore. Also there's enough islands over the sea to expand in a map that big.

I withheld too. Landmass is very important, expecially if you would like landmass <50, just as I do.
About Freeciv.fi, which I didn't know, I really did like the basic planet settings on
http://freeciv.fi/wiki/S%C3%A4%C3%A4nn% … -asetukset
although is not clear (I use google translator) which landmass you use.
If you turn tiny island on, then I would also go for HEX!!!
I will start a forum topic just for planetology settings, hope to find out all opinions on subject

So, the poll passed. What did we agree on again? Which setting do I change? tilesperplayer = 600?
Offline
I think you have to make two changes
set mapsize player
set tilesperplayer 600
Offline
Is there really a setting called tilesperplayer? I didn't know. I was assuming you could easily calculate mapsize (Nx600) and set it using /set mapsize.
By the way, the set-defaults vote is proposing landmass 50%. (which I like). If it passes, 600 tiles per player would not be big at all.
If anyone wants different mapsize, he can open a 2nd vote and try overwriting this one.
Btw, I used to really like maho's multiple choice votes. They were based on "instant run-off voting" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_runoff_voting) which I think is the best voting system.

So, do I set:
set mapsize player
set tilesperplayer 600
or do we make another mapsize poll?
Offline
The poll question "Shall we set mapsize to 600 tiles per player?" passed.
Those two lines of code do exactly that.
No further poll is necessary.
